Hossein al-Khudairi, former Egyptian ambassador to Iran, participated in an interview organized by Sputnik to answer questions about the impact of the Trump administration’s inscription of the Islamic Revolutionary Guards Corps on its list of terrorist organizations.
“What the United States has done is a strategic mistake,” concluded the Egyptian ambassador.
“In the past, Iranian forces, including those of the IRGC, have repeatedly rescued US forces from the traps of terrorists in Iraq, Syria and Afghanistan. But after Trump’s decision, US soldiers are now seen by Quds Force and Iranian armed forces as terrorists. From now on, if US forces are attacked, the Iranian armed forces, including the Qods Force, will no longer intervene, “he replied in response to a question about the consequences of Trump’s decision.
“In the past, American ships sailed safely in the Persian Gulf, because the security of this region is ensured by the Iranian army. From now on, they will have to be more cautious and be careful not to approach the territorial waters and the maritime borders of the RII since they are considered as terrorists.
Although Trump has designated the IRGC, a component of the Iranian military, as a terrorist organization, it is unlikely that we will see any major changes on the ground and in the regional equations. By the very admission of US authorities, this action by Trump does not mean his intention to enter into direct confrontation with Iran, but it is a purely symbolic gesture. “
