Tehran. The commander of he Iranian naval forces say Iran and Russia have agreed to conduct joint naval drills in the Persian Gulf region “in the near future.”
Rear Admiral Hossein Khanzadi, said on the sidelines of the Russian Navy Day celebrations in Saint Petersburg, Russia, that the drills will be held before the end of the year and stretch over an area in the Indian Ocean, Makran waters, Strait of Hormuz and the Persian Gulf.
Heading a military delegation, Khanzadi participated in the Russian Navy Day celebrations, attended by representatives of 20 countries in Saint Petersburg on Sunday.
The Iranian Navy chief further noted that the two sides also signed an agreement aimed to boost military cooperation with regard to naval forces, a first in its kind.
Back in late April, Khanzadi unveiled plans for a joint naval drill with Russia in coming months.
