Rio: Blast Heard Near Men’s Cycling Road Race

An explosion was heard nearby the finishing line of the men’s cycling road race at the Rio Olympics on Saturday but no signs of panic or injuries have been reported and the race continued.

The bomb squad agents were operating near the press tribune at the site but the cause of the blast was not immediately clear. In recent days, bomb squad members have detonated a number of unattended bags in controlled explosions in Rio.

Games started with a grand opening ceremony on Friday night onwards, and on Saturday some qualifying events were being conducted in some sports while in hockey and tennis, opening rounds were played.

Rio’s cycling track- Velodrome was under several criticism, as its construction was completed few days prior to the kick-start of Rio Games.
