JEDDAH: Prominent Saudi cleric Ayed Al-Qarni posted a video on social media in which he condemned Turkey’s regional policy and its President Recep Tayyip Erdogan.
“I was deceived by him like other Muslims,” Al-Qarni said in the six-minute video posted on Twitter, where his name was trending regionally.
“The man showed his true colors through his shameful stances, including hostility toward the Kingdom.”
Al-Qarni expressed regret for having praised Erdogan in a video posted in 2013, saying the president is now stirring up “sedition in the Muslim world.”
The cleric added: “He sold Islamic issues with mere talk. He sold the Syrians and abandoned them. He meddled in every issue in the region. He participated in the killing of Libyans, Yemenis and Syrians.”
Al-Qarni also criticized the closeness of Ankara’s relationships with Israel and Iran. He said current Turkish policy aims to “tear apart the Islamic world.”
A preacher, scholar, author and poet, Al-Qarni has more than 19 million followers on Twitter and is popular among Muslims worldwide. His books have been translated into various languages.
