UP ATS arrests two Kashmiris in Deoband for alleged links with Jaish-e-Mohammed

The Uttar Pradesh ATS on Friday claimed to have arrested two persons from Deoband for their alleged link with Jaish-e-Mohammed. They are being identified as Shahnawaz Teli and Aaqib Ahmed Malik.

Uttar Pradesh DGP OP Singh has confirmed the arrests for being allegedly involved in recruiting students into the terror outfit. The UP ATS has also claimed to have recovered pistols and 30 live cartridges from them.

He told reporters, “We got to know that these two person were staying in Deoband in Saharanpur as students without any admission. After suspecting their motive, we began to place them under an electronic surveillance. Once we were sure of our suspicion, we deployed the IG, ATS, who led a team to carry out an operation last night and arrested two suspected terrorists.”

Singh said that both Shahnawaz and Aaqib were ‘Kashmiris.’ He said, “Shahnawaz hails from Kulgam in Jammu and Kashmir, while Aaqib  Ahmed Malik is from Pulwama in Jammu and Kashmir.”

Singh alleged that Shahnawaz was tasked by the JeM to recruit ‘new terrorists’ from Saharanpur.

Uttar Pradesh Deputy Chief Minister Keshav Prashad Maurya told news agency ANI, “UP ATS has arrested two suspected JeM terrorists from Saharanpur and recovered arms and  incriminating material from them. This is a message to the enemies of the nation that terrorists will not be able to hide anymore.”

Today’s arrests assume significance in light of the Pulwama terror attack, which killed 45 CRPF soldiers. The JeM had released a video of its suicide bomber, claiming responsibility for the attack.
