Senior Advocate And Former Law Minister Arun Jaitley Passes Away

Senior Advocate and former Union Law Minister Arun Jaitley, 66, passed away. He was undergoing treatment at AIIMS New Delhi since August 9.

A press release by AIIMS declared that he breathed his last at 12.07 PM today.

Jaitley previously held the cabinet portfolios of Finance, Defence, Corporate Affairs, Commerce and Industry and Law and Justice in the Vajpayee government and the first Narendra Modi government. From 2009 to 2014 he served as the Leader of the Opposition in the Rajya Sabha.

Jaitley has been practicing law before the Supreme Court of India and several High Courts in the country since 1987. In January 1990, Delhi High Court designated him as a Senior Advocate. He was appointed Additional Solicitor General by the V. P. Singh government in 1989 and did the paperwork for the investigations into the Bofors scandal.

Arun Jaitley studied at St. Xavier’s School, Delhi from 1957–69. He graduated with a honours degree in commerce, BCom from Shri Ram College of Commerce, New Delhi in 1973. He passed his LLB degree from the Faculty of Law, University of Delhi, in 1977.

He was undergoing treatment for kidney complications since 2018. He had decided not to join the new Modi cabinet citing health issues.

Mourning the demise of Jaitley, Supreme Court Bar Association President Senior Advocate Rakesh Khanna said :

Shri Jaitley was not only a brilliant politician and statesman but also a legal luminary and lawyer of exceptional caliber, a designated Senior Advocate and former Additional Solicitor General of India and one of the most respected and loved senior members of the Supreme Court Bar Association.

He will always be fondly remembered by the entire legal fraternity for his astute knowledge of law and legal acumen.

The void created by his demise in the political as well as the legal arena would be difficult to fill”.

Jaitley is survived by his wife Sangeeta Jaitley, and daughter Sonali Jaitley, son Rohan Jaitley and son-in-law Jaiyesh Bakshi. His children and son-in-law are advocates too.
