On SC Verdict Imposing National Anthem in Movies

Editorial by Times Headline Writer

For the past two days, President-elect Trump has been under severe criticism for saying that flag burners must be punished. He seems to be unaware that the U.S. Supreme Court has twice ruled that flag-burning is constitutionally protected speech.

In a very similar tone, Indian government has ruled that National Anthem must be played before movies in theaters, as recently ruled by the Supreme Court

In fact, such orders are given only in fascist or quasi-fascist societies and only by dictatorial governments, not by Supreme Courts. The court has no business giving such orders.

According to the latest news reports, the SC bench has stated that people must show respect to the national anthem and the national flag. It has called it “imperative” to show them honour and respect.
