Proud of idea of India, not sorry to lose any business: Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal to bigots threatening to uninstall app

Zomato founder Deepinder Goyal has issued a terse response to Hindutva bigots after they threatened to uninstall the food delivery app from their phones in light of a Hindu customer refusing to accept his order from a Muslim delivery boy.

Goyal took to Twitter to say that he would not compromise with his values even if it meant losing business. He wrote, “We are proud of the idea of India – and the diversity of our esteemed customers and partners. We aren’t sorry to lose any business that comes in the way of our values.”

Several Hindutva flag-bearers had threatened to remove the Zomato app from their phones after the company refused to entertain the bigotry exhibited by a bigottedd customer. Replying to one Amit Shukla’s tweet, Zomato had written, “Food doesn’t have a religion. It is a religion.”

The company was widely hailed on social media for not succumbing to the bullying tactics of Hindutva fanatics. Bollywood actress Swara Bhasker wrote on Twitter, “Kudos 2 u Mr. Goyal ! @deepigoyal THANK YOU for standing up for the real idea of #India & true Indian values! You are a true citizen & patriot. 🇮🇳 More power to u!! @ZomatoIN @Zomato ♥️ I hope larger corporations who in the past haven’t had the courage 2 stand up to trolls learn!”

Industrialist Harsh Goenka wrote, “If you ask me who I am, I will say I am an Indian, a son,a father, a businessman, a Hindu…my being Hindu is only one aspect of my identity. Yet world over, identity is being defined by narrow confines of religion at cost of all other identities. It’s a dangerous trend!”

Meanwhile, Zomato continues to remain the top Twitter trend in India. We salute Zomato and its founder Deepinder Goyal for their praiseworthy stand against bigotry.
