A scuffle between two student groups in Greater Noida’s Sharda University has left many including one Kashmiri student badly injured.
According to reports, the university has been shut until Sunday following the Thursday’s violence. Among those injured are also Afghan nationals. The Knowledge Park Police Station in Greater Noida has launched a probe.
The Kashmiri student injured has been identified as Ihtesham, who is pursuing a bachelors degree in Medical Imaging Technology (BMIT). He has now been admitted at Sharda hospital after being physically assaulted.
The administration has banned the entry of media persons on the university campus.
Ihtesham was injured after a scuffle broke out between the local students and AFghan nationals studying at the university. “A group of students ruthlessly beat up Ihtesham, leaving him badly injured,” Greater Kashmir website quoted an unnamed student as saying.
Another student was quoted as saying, “We have kept ourselves confined to the varsity premises. We are not feeling safe in Sharda University now.”
DSP, Gautam Buddha Nagar, Amit Koshore told Janta Ka Reporter that the Kashmiri student was assaulted because he was mistaken as an Afghan national by his attackers. “The university administration and the student groups met after the scuffle and it was decided that action will be taken on the findings of the probe committee’s findings. The university has been closed till Sunday.”
“There were many students shouting ‘Bharat Mata ki Jai’ and other communal slogans. They dragged out the Afghan students and beat them up. Guards deployed on the campus shielded some of the victims by locking them inside a room… one of the students was beaten up inside a car while being whisked away by police,” the eyewitness told IANS.
University officials have denied reports of any scuffle. “There was no violence today (Thursday). Some students had gathered to demand to know what action had been taken against the erring Afghan students. We told them that we are yet to conclude our inquiry and will be ready with the report by Monday,” Dean of School of Language and Culture Pramod Kumar Mitra was quoted as saying.
