The incident happened when students of the varsity were taking out protest march from Jamia to Raj Ghat.
A student from Jamia Millia Islamia was injured when a man opened fire at a group of protesters on Thursday afternoon and shouted “Yeh lo Azaadi“, triggering panic in the city’s Jamia area, eye-witnesses said.
The man was caught on camera brandishing a gun outside the varsity in the presence of large contigent of police and media.
The student, identified as Shahdab, was shot at in the left wrist. He was taken to a hospital and is undegoing treatment.
“We were moving towards the Holy Family Hospital where the police had raised barricades. Suddenly, a gun-wielding man came out and opened fire. One bullet hit my friend’s hand,” Aamna Asif, a student of economics at the university, was quoted as saying by PTI news agency.
She said her friend, Shadab, a mass communication student, was injured in his left hand and taken to the AIIMS Trauma Centre.
The man was heard shouting, “Kisko Chahiye Aazadi (Who wants Freedom)” while pointing his gun at the students of the Jamia who had taken a protest march against CAA and NRC from the varsity to Raj Ghat.
Al-Ameen, another student, corroborated that the man shouted “Yeh lo azaadi (Here, take your freedom)” while brandishing the gun.
The gun-weilding man was later overpowered by protesting students. He was later arrested and is being questioned.
