Madhubani: Ashram head held for rape of Ludhiana-based sisters

PATNA: Vishwa Kabir Vichar Manch chairman Manmohan Das (44) was arrested from his Phulparas ashram in Madhubani district on Tuesday for alleged sexual exploitation of two Ludhiana-based sisters on different occasions since 2009.

The elder sister, now aged around 22 years, was a minor when she was first raped by Das after attending a religious gathering (satsang) in Supaul in 2009. The victim mustered courage to raise her voice against him only after the infamous Gurmeet Ram Rahim’s conviction in Haryana.

The complainant reached Supaul from Ludhiana on Monday and submitted a written application before SP Mrityunjay Kumar Chaudhary, who directed the district women’s police station to lodge an FIR.

Women’s police station SHO Prem Lata Bhupashree said further investigation was on. “Das used to visit several places, including Ludhiana and Nepal, for satsang during which he used to exploit the sisters,” she said.

Patna high court advocate Abhishek Anand, who convinced the girls’ family to come to Bihar from Ludhiana and lodge an FIR against the accused, said they originally belonged to a Madhubani village, but had shifted to Ludhiana in early 2000s.

“Both the sisters, along with their parents, had reached Supaul for two days to attend a satsang in 2009. The accused had made a video of the crime and stated sexually exploiting her on different occasions since then,” he said while quoting the FIR lodged by the victim.

Anand said the accused later raped the victim’s younger sister in 2016 and then repeated the same offence since then. “Das had also raped the sisters during his visits to Ludhiana for satsangs, but the parents kept mum due to social stigma,” he alleged.
