Kashmir police arrest cleric, books artist for expressing their solidarity with Palestine

New Delhi: Jammu and Kashmir Police arrested famous religious cleric Sarjan Barkati two days after he delivered a speech on the occasion of Eid, in which he talked about the sufferings of Palestinians and prayed for their wellbeing, The Kashmir Walla reported.

The police have also lodged a case against Srinagar based artist, Mudasir Gul, under the Public Safety Act in connection with a graffiti on Palestine.

Barkati’s wife, Shabroza Akhter, said that he was arrested by Zainapora Police from his residence on Saturday morning.

Locals said that he was on the stage for just a few minutes in which he talked about the current situation in Palestine.

A police official also confirmed Barkati’s arrest. However, he did not divulge the reasons behind his arrest.

Barkati was released in October 2020 after four years of incarceration.

He had become the face of the 2016 public uprising after the killing of Hizb-ul-Mujahideen commander Burhan Muzaffar Wani. He was arrested on October 1 that year.
