The panchayat head and 17 others have been named as accused in the matter.
Two men from the Scheduled Caste (SC) community were tied to a tree and spit on by villagers in Jharkhand’s Giridih district. This was allegedly decided upon the village panchayat and its head as a punishment for allegedly killing a cattle (goat) from another community.
The incident took place in Ghaghardiha village under Muffasil police station area of Giridih. Two separate FIRs have been lodged over the matter.
The victims Paramanand Das and Shankar Das filed a complaint that a particular community (Yadav) used to let their cattle free in their farm for grazing regularly. According to the police complaint, when the two saw the cattle again on their cultivated farm on Saturday, they only tried to send off the animals.
Following which, the cattle was killed by the owners themselves and the two were placed in dock for killing the cattle.
Then, a panchayat was called by its head Baleshwar Yadav to look into the issue. Later, the duo was tied to a tree and many people spit on them in the presence of at least a hundred people.
The other FIR was lodged by Shakuntala Devi, who accused the duo for killing her cattle with a premeditated plan. Speaking to India Today TV, the panchayat head Baleshwar Yadav confirmed the charges on Shakuntala Devi.
However, he denied that the duo was tied to the tree by the panchayat. He said the crowd and onlookers tied them both to the tree, not them.
Acting officer in-charge of Muffasil police station Ratnesh Thakur said police had the information of a panchayat being convened over the cattle killing issue. Police reached the spot and tried to pacify both the sides but it was of no avail, he said. Both sides were brought to the police station and two FIRs were lodged.
