I feel a sense of agony that forces SC judges to address the media: Salman Khurshid

This has become one of the most dramatic days in the history of India’s judiciary. Supreme court Judges Justices J Chelameswar, Madan B Lokur, Ranjan Gogoi and Kurian Joseph, have appealed to the nation to save the Supreme Court. They have addressed a press briefing and talked about several internal issues within the institution.

Senior advocate and Congress leader Salman Khurshid have expressed his “sadness” on the statements made by the four Supreme Court judges. Khurshid said,”I am deeply sad and pained by this and I feel a sense of agony that highest court of land should come under such severe stress that forces judges to address the media,”.He said, “I hope some communication links remain established and the court will return to its normal functioning,”

Earlier in the day, Justice Chelameswar, while briefing the press said,”We owe a responsibility to the institution and the nation. Our efforts have failed in convincing the CJI to take steps to protect the institution,”.He also said,”…the administration of the Supreme Court is not in order. There are many things less than desirable that have happened in the last few months… As senior-most justices of the court, we have a responsibility to the nation and institution. We tried to persuade the CJI that some things are not in order and he needs to take remedial measures. Unfortunately, our efforts failed. We all believe that the SC must maintain its equanimity. Democracy will not survive without a free judiciary.”
