Migrant workers from Bihar and Uttar Pradesh have started leaving Gujarat after protests broke out over the rape of a 14-month-old child. The accused, identified as Ravindra Sahu, a man from Bihar, has been arrested.
Several districts of north Gujarat including Gandhinagar, Ahmedabad, Patan, Sabarkantha and Mehsana witnessed violent protests on Saturday, a day after the the accused was arrested.
This led to the arrest of 150 people for targeting migrant workers from Bihar and UP. “In reaction to the Himmatnagar’s Gambhoi rape incident, some people are targeting those who have come to Gujarat from other states. This is totally unacceptable. We have arrested more than 150 such people and are patrolling areas that have more non-Gujarati people,” Gujarat Director General of Police Shivanand Jha told news agency ANI.
Congress leader Alpesh Thakor, whose Thakor Sena in Gujarat, was spearheading the protests, claimed on Saturday that the state government had accepted all his demands.
He has now reportedly appealed for for calm.
In some cases workers from north India have been asked by their landlords to leave. “My children were playing in the lane outside our house when the mob attacked on Thursday night. They are still in shock. I took my four-year-old son to the doctor to calm him down that night,” Rajkumari Jatav from Madhya Pradesh, was quoted by Indian Express.
Meanwhile, former deputy chief minister of Bihar and RJD leader, Tejashwi Yadav has slammed Prime Minister Narendra Modi for the exodus of workers from north India. He wrote, “Dear
@narendramodi Ji, Is it ur so called ‘Wonder world of Gujrat’ you had sold to Nation in 2014? People from UP, Bihar,MP being mobbed in Gujarat. BJP/RSS has turned Gujrat into a nursery of hatred & violence against poor, dalits & minorities. Shameful!”
