Engineer Among 10 Arrested For Terror Plot Targeting VIPs: Probe Agency

The group allegedly linked to ISIS is called “Harkat ul Harb e Islam”, officials said.

NEW DELHI: A terror module inspired by ISIS, planning suicide attacks on vital installations and VIPs, has been detected, officials said in Delhi today. Ten people have been arrested by the National Investigation Agency or NIA and six others have been detained following searches in multiple locations in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh.
The group, officials said, was planning to carry out suicide attacks in north India, especially Delhi. Their target list includes vital installations, crowded places and VIPs.

Those involved include a civil engineer, a maulvi, an undergraduate student and an auto driver. The maulvi, officials said, was the leader of the group, which was receiving instructions from a handler based abroad.

Admitting the investigation is at a “very initial stage”, officials said the group calls itself “Harkat ul Harb e Islam”. One among the detained is the leader of the group and five of them are from Amroha in Uttar Pradesh.

Multiple searches were conducted in various parts of Delhi and Uttar Pradesh by the NIA since early morning in connection with the investigation into a new ISIS module.

Sixteen locations in Delhi and Uttar Pradesh have been searched. In east Delhi’s Jafarabad, the NIA carried out searches with the Delhi Police’s Special Cell.

The searches yielded a country-made rocket launcher. Besides, 12 pistols have been found along with 112 alarm clocks, which were to be used for making bombs, the officials said; 150 rounds of ammunition has also been found.

All their internal communications were been carried out on Whatsapp, officials said.
