Australian cricketer Pat Cummins changes mind, donates money to UNICEF and not ‘PM CARES Fund’

Australian cricketer Pat Cummins has changed his mind on the recipient of his donation and decided against the ‘PM CARES’ Fund. Cummins made the stunning revelation in a social media post after Cricket Australia similar financial assistance for India to deal with ongoing pandemic.

“Terrific work @CricketAus FYI I ended up allocating my donation to UNICEF Australia’s India COVID-19 Crisis Appeal. If you’re able to, please join many others in supporting this here.”

This was after Cricket Australia said that it was pledging $50,000 to help India deal with the pandemic. It said, “Australian Cricket has been deeply saddened by the devastation caused by second coronavirus wave to hit India, a country with which Australians share a strong friendship and connection. Australians and Indians share a special bond and, for many, our mutual love of cricket is central to that friendship. It has been distressing and saddening to learn of the suffering of so many of our Indian sisters and brothers and our hearts go out to everyone impacted.”

Cricket Australia and UNICEF have together raised more than $70,000.

Cummins had earlier announced a financial help of $50,000 towards oxygen supply in various hospitals. In a moving Instagram post, Pat Cummins had written, “India is a country I have come to love dearly over the years and the people here are one of the warmest and kindest I have met. To know so many are suffering so much this time saddens me greatly.”

His heartfelt note had continued, “There has been quite a bit of discussion over here as to whether it is appropriate for IPL to continue while COVID-19 infection rates remain high. I am advised that the Indian Government is of the view that playing the IPL while the population is in lockdown provides a few hours of joy and respite each day at an otherwise difficult time for the country.”

Many had slammed Sachin Tendulkar, Sourav Ganguly and Virat Kohli to shame them since it had taken a foreigner to remind these so-called legends about the plight of their own Indians during the pandemic.

Cummins had earned praise from Indians but many had questioned his decision to donate his hard-earned money to ‘PM CARES’ fund since it lacked transparency and no one knew who benefited from the donations.
