6 cops suspended after father of woman who accused BJP MLA of rape dies in custody

The woman and her family had attempted suicide outside Yogi Adityanath’s house after she complained of inaction against Unnao BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar who she claimed had raped her.

The father of a woman who claimed she had been raped by a BJP MLA and his accomplices died today after he was allegedly beaten in police custody following his arrest on Sunday, news agency ANI reported.

A doctor from the district hospital in Unnao confirmed the father’s death. “He was admitted to hospital last night by police after he complained of abdominal pain and vomiting. He passed away in early morning hours,” Dr Atul was quoted as saying by ANI.

Two police officers and four constables were suspended and four others accused of beating the rape victim’s father have been arrested, Unnao Superintendent of Police Pushpanjali Devi today said.

The woman and her family had attempted suicide outside Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath’s house in Lucknow on Sunday after she complained of inaction against Unnao BJP MLA Kuldeep Singh Sengar who she claimed had raped her.

She also said that her family was threatened and her father beaten up after she had lodged a complaint against Sengar.

“I was raped. I have been going from pillar to post for one year but no one listened to me. I want all of them arrested otherwise I will kill myself. I had even gone to the CM to no result. When we lodged an FIR, we were threatened,” the victim had told news agency ANI.

Police had intervened in the attempted suicide and took the woman and her family to Gautam Palli Police Station in Lucknow where she again tried to kill herself.

“They alleged that Kuldeep Singh Sengar raped her and that no action was taken (against him). They (victim’s family) were beaten up by the other party. On further probe, it was found that both parties are in a dispute since 10-12 years,” Rajiv Krishan, ADG Lucknow, had told news agency ANI.
