The report of the victim’s death add to a string of tragic events that have unfolded since last week beginning from the rape and murder of a 26-year old veterinarian in Hyderabad- an act of horror that caused wide outrage across the country.
LUCKNOW :The 23-year old Unnao rape case survivor who was burnt alive on Thursday by two accused died on Friday night at Delhi’s Safdarjung Hospital after battling for life for almost 40 hours.
Suffering from 90% burns, the victim had been kept on ventilator at the hospital and was extremely critical.
“She suffered cardiac arrest at 11:10 pm and we tried to resuscitate her, but she could not survive and at 11:40 pm she died,” Dr. Shalabh Kumar, HOD (Burns and plastic) at Safdarjung Hospital said as reported by ANI.
The young rape survivor had been attacked on Thursday morning by two – Shivam Trivedi and Shubham- accused of raping her last December.
As she was on her way to nearby town Raibareli to testify against the criminals in a local court she was waylaid, attacked, stabbed and then finally doused with kerosene and set ablaze in broad daylight.
She was brought to Lucknow’s Civil Hospital around 10:30 am and was airlifted to Delhi in the evening for better treatment.
The UP government had on Thursday directed the police authorities to take immediate and strict action against the accused following which five including Shivam and Shubham had been arrested on the basis of the statement given by the victim.
However, the UP Police was also found distancing itself from the event and not wanting to take responsibility when the DGP OP Singh told ET that the victim had not “approached the police for security”. It should be noted that the key accused Shivam had been released on bail five days ago on November 30 and could have been expected to create nuisance for the accused.
Meanwhile the state government on Friday told ET that it had called for the case to be fast-tracked adding that the trial would also be fast tracked. The Unnao Police had told reporters that it was providing protection to the victim’s family who was there with her in Delhi as well as had made arrangements for its protection back in the village . According to reports a relative of the victim had also received threatening calls from the accused ‘s kin who wanted the family to back down and not pursue the case. They threatened the relative of burning down his house and shop.
The report of the victim’s death add to a string of tragic events that have unfolded since last week beginning from the rape and murder of a 26-year old veterinarian in Hyderabad- an act of horror that caused wide outrage across the country. On Friday, the four accused of the rape of the doctor were killed by the Hyderabad police in an encounter when reportedly two of the four tried to open fire after snatching the police’s arms at the crime spot. They had been brought there to recreate the crime scene.
