Rohith Vemula 2nd Death Anniversary: ‘Rohith! In death, you taught us a few lessons’

On Rohith Vemula’s second death anniversary activists and common people remember him. Rohith was a dalit scholar and a social activist. He protested against injustice against Dalits and supported the oppressed. Dalit leader and MLA from Vadgam Jignesh Mevani remembers him and tweeted,”Rohith Vemula will live through us.”JNU student leader Shehla Rashid on twitter remembers Rohith Vemula. She tweeted,”We rally behind the deceased, but fail to organise around the living. Rest in power, Rohith! In death, you taught us a few lessons.” She also mentioned a few hashtag such as #JusticeForRohith #EndCasteDiscrimination.

Dipankar said on twitter that They took your life, but they couldn’t kill your dream. Today you are alive in millions of ignited minds, as a loved icon of young India, as a movement for genuine democracy, for liberty, equality and fraternity in the face of a fascist offensive. Salute #RohithVemula.

Saneer Nazeer said,”You will not die #RohithVemula..”.Twitter user Priya Kumari said,”He committed suicide. But he is living in our hearts, and we will not let him die.”

Rohith Chakravarti Vemula was an Indian PhD student at the University of Hyderabad and author of the book Caste is Not a Rumour. He was an activist with the Ambedkar Students’ Association (ASA), he committed suicide on 17 January 2016 following a controversy that had begun in July 2015 when the university reportedly stopped paying him a fellowship of ₹25,000 (US$390) per month because an enquiry found he had been “raising issues under the banner of Ambedkar Students Association”. He was mentally tortured allegedly by administration also.
