New Delhi: Justice K. Chelameswar, Justice Ranjan Gogoi, Justice Madan Lokur and Justice Kurien Joseph have found support in senior counsel Prashant Bhushan. He has questioned the functioning of the Supreme Court and Chief Justice Deepak Mishra.
Prashant Bhushan tweeted about the developments,”Truly unprecedented! Kudos to 4 senior most judges of SC who addressed a Press Conf today to apprise the people about the extraordinary abuse of ‘master of roster’ powers by CJI in selectively assigning politically sensitive cases to hand picked junior judges for desired outcome.”
Bhushan supported the stand taken by four senior judges and said Chief Justice of India ignore the important cases and dismiss them. He said that when the judges took a stand and objected to such acts, they were ignored…these judges had to take this step, so that the entire country would wake up. Bhushan said that CJI should resign. He said that the way these four judges have taken a stand is historically unfortunate but it was also necessary. Bhushan said that this was not only a serious matter but it is also a violation of Code of Conduct. Prashant Bhushan said that CJI is misusing his power.
Earlier in the day, Justice Chelameswar said,”We owe a responsibility to the institution and the nation. Our efforts have failed in convincing the CJI to take steps to protect the institution,”.He also said,”…the administration of the Supreme Court is not in order. There are many things less than desirable that have happened in the last few months… As senior-most justices of the court, we have a responsibility to the nation and institution. We tried to persuade the CJI that some things are not in order and he needs to take remedial measures. Unfortunately, our efforts failed. We all believe that the SC must maintain its equanimity. Democracy will not survive without a free judiciary.”
